Tottenham set sights on Ferran Torres transfer after Barcelona approach

Ferran Torres is being eyed for a potential return to the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur one of the sides interested.

Some frantic late incomings to close out the winter transfer window have helped to strengthen Ange Postecoglou’s squad for the second half of the season, with Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel both arriving.

However, given the duo are both on loan – albeit with respective obligations and options to buy – the Spurs hierarchy will be keen to make more permanent additions once the summer window opens.

Though the Lilywhites have the chance to sign Tel from Bayern Munich for £45.7million in the summer (David Ornstein), they’ve already sounded out one of his team-mates and are now setting their sights on Barcelona.

Ferran Torres on Tottenham transfer radar

Spanish outlet Fichajes reported on 8 February that both Spurs and North London rivals Arsenal are interested in former Manchester City forward Ferran Torres, who has struggled for minutes in Catalonia.

Barcelona received enquiries about Torres’ availability in the winter window but decided to keep the Spanish international in their squad despite their difficult financial situation.

The possibility of a sale in the summer remains high for Barca, and with Spurs looking to strengthen out wide, decision-makers at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium see Torres’ “dynamism” as a key factor.

Tottenham face transfer battle for Ferran Torres signature

With Spurs’ qualification for next season’s European competitions set to play a key role in deciding Torres’ next destination, they’re currently at a huge disadvantage in the race for his signature.

Sat 14th in the Premier League table and a fair distance away from the European places, the Lilywhites now look to be solely reliant on cup competitions if they’re to seal a place on the continent next term.

Their chances of doing so via an EFL Cup victory came crashing down on Thursday as their 1-0 aggregate lead was obliterated by Liverpool at Anfield, and Sunday could also see them exit the FA Cup.

Not only could Postecoglou be sacked and out of a job if his side lose in the fourth round at Villa Park, but it would also leave Spurs only able to reach Europe next term by winning the Europa League.

Champions League qualification would beckon for the Lilywhites if they do manage to go all the way in Europe’s second-tier competition, and that would certainly mask a vastly below-par season.

However, that all looks to be one hell of a stretch based on their current form, and if Spurs are to beat Arsenal to Torres’ services this summer, there are dominoes aplenty which need to fall into place.
