Tottenham lose new midfielder deal despite £21m transfer agreement

Tottenham are looking ahead to a vital summer transfer window in order to stop the rot in North London.

It has been a disastrous season for Ange Postecoglou and his future lies in the balance, with Europa League success potentially the only thing that will save him.

If the Lilywhites don’t win the Europa League, it will mean no European football next season and could seriously harm their success in the summer transfer window.

Johnny Cardoso distances from Tottenham move

Having had a successful season with Real Betis, Johnny Cardoso is set to leave at the end of the campaign and Tottenham have been interested in gaining his services.

The Lilywhites initially held negotiations over the 23-year-old last summer and have the opportunity to gain his services in the summer for a pre-agreed clause of £21million or profit from a sell-on clause if he goes elsewhere.

Although this looks like a good deal for Spurs, who seemingly have the first opportunity to strike a deal for Cardoso, it might be the player himself who stops this deal from going through.

According to Spanish newspaper ABC Sevilla’s print edition (29 April), Cardoso is now said not to be convinced about signing for Tottenham next season, with links to their poor domestic form.

The report states that the midfielder is not committed to joining Tottenham and the decision over his future will be his.

Cardoso change of heart highlights Tottenham problems

Although the Europa League has been the saving grace for Tottenham this season, terrible form in the Premier League has left Spurs sitting 16th in the league, which is just not good enough.

Any hope of European football next season rests solely on winning the Europa League this season, meaning that if they are not successful, there will be little attraction.

Cardoso has previously spoken about a desire to play in Europe, so it’s not surprising that this could end up being a dealbreaker for him in the summer.

Daniel Levy has to take this as a serious warning about the level of work that has to be done in North London to improve things this season, as this will just be the first of many similar stories if this is what the new Tottenham are going to look like.
