Tottenham face summer exodus as shock Cristian Romero transfer news emerges

Tottenham are facing a summer of change as a host of players assess the next move in their careers.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have left much to be desired this season as they sit 14th in the Premier League with just nine games left to play.

Having missed out on the domestic cup competitions, Spurs’ only chance of winning silverware this season, as Postecoglou promised, lies in the UEFA Europa League.

Should that not be the case, Tottenham will not have UEFA Champions League football next season.

Cristian Romero open to leaving Tottenham

Missing out on Champions League football could lead to a mass exodus at Tottenham as a number of players are already expected to consider their futures this summer, according to the Mail.

The newspaper reported via their website on Tuesday (25 March) that Cristian Romero is among those who could depart at the end of the season.

Romero is open to leaving Tottenham if they do not qualify for the Champions League, with Atletico Madrid already monitoring his situation in London.

The Argentina international was notably critical of Spurs’ recruitment in December after an injury crisis exposed the lack of squad depth in Postecoglou’s ranks.

Romero has been a key player for the Premier League since arriving from Atalanta on a loan-to-buy deal worth £43million in 2021, making 115 appearances across all competitions.

While his existing contract runs until 2027, he could cut short his association with Tottenham if they fail to get past Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League quarter-final in April.

Postecoglou’s future to come under review

Tottenham are bracing for a summer of change and that may extend beyond the players.

Postecoglou’s position as Spurs’ manager is certain to come under review if Daniel Levy decides not to pull the plug on him before then.

The former Celtic boss made a strong start to his tenure as the Lilywhites’ manager, leading them to a fifth-place finish in the league last term.

However, they have already lost 15 league games this season, their worst record since the 2008-09 campaign.
