James Maddison has been one of the first to react as the future of Joao Palhinha's Tottenham spell was confirmed.

The Portuguese midfielder joined the Lilywhites on loan for the 2025-2026 season and his deal had an option to buy.

However, it appears the N17 outfit has decided against triggering that option.

It comes after the Lilywhites have confirmed the arrival of Mateus Fernandes, with a deal for Sandro Tonali inching closer.

The midfield options will certainly be plentiful and full of quality but Palhinha will be missed next season.

Ahead of his future, the Portuguese international has now penned a message to supporters, with his teammates issuing messages.

Joao Palhinha developments leave little doubt over Tottenham's next move

With Palhinha leaving, Tottenham's midfield rebuild is set to continue.

The departure of the defensive midfielder will likely be filled by the incoming Tonali.

Nonetheless, Palhinha proved to be one of Tottenham's better players last season and he will have endeared himself to supporters.

The opposite has also seemed to be the case; Palhinha has directly spoken to the Lilywhites faithful.

Taking to Instagram, Palhinha issued a heartfelt message to supporters as he confirmed he would not be returning for next season.

His Tottenham teammates were quick to show the love, with Maddison alongside Micky van de Ven, Dominic Solanke and Richarlison sending the midfielder messages.

Maddison sent a smiling face with hearts emoji as well as a white love heart as Palhinha waved goodbye.

Micky van de Ven issued the same smiling face with hearts emoji with Richarlison sending an applause emoji.

While, Solanke sent him two white love hearts too.

The reaction showcases the personality that the 30-year-old had within the dressing room.

And he will assuredly be missed by those within Tottenham's squad.

What is next for Palhinha?

With Palhinha departing Tottenham, he will now return to parent club Bayern Munich.

From there, manager Vincent Kompany will assess the situation but after shipping him out last season, his future is likely away from Bavaria.

At 30 years old, the midfielder is past the age where top Premier League sides are willing to take the punt.

A move back to Portugal could also be on the cards for the now-former Spurs loanee.

However, Kompany could spring a surprise and decide to reintegrate him into his plans.

Despite Tottenham's poor season, Palhinha did prove on a personal level he is capable of playing to a high quality.
