Cristian Romero may finally be on his way out of Tottenham Hotspur this summer as they look to bring in a new centre-back.

Spurs' downfall over the last 24 months certainly comes down to a number of factors, though the character of the squad is among the most promiment.

As good as he can be, Romero has been a liability for the North Londoners, as showcased by the fact that he received two red cards and nine yellow cards last season.

The Argentine was heavily linked with an exit from Tottenham in the winter, with that interest likely to resurface ahead of the summer.

And with Spurs closing in on a new arrival, his days in North London may be numbered.

Tottenham edge closer to Jan Paul van Hecke transfer

Spurs have been admirers of Jan Paul van Hecke for a while now, and it looks as though they may be set to get their hands on him.

As reported by Joost Blaauwhof, the Brighton defender has already agreed personal terms with Spurs and is no longer pursuing a move to any other club.

The only thing left to sort is the final transfer fee, with Tottenham expected to have to pay in the region of £50million this summer.

Van Hecke is believed to be looking to have the deal finalised before the World Cup, which gets underway next week.

Van Hacke transfer opens door for Romero exit

If Van Hecke were to seal his move from Brighton this summer, it would certainly not to be a squad player.

The Dutchman would be looking for consistent minutes, and that would almost certainly come alongside his international teammate, Micky van de Ven.

At the same time, Romero will not want to become the squad player himself, and having attracted interest from the likes of Real Madrid in past transfer windows, he would be almost certain to push for a move

And quite frankly, after the last 12 months, an exit would be the best outcome for all parties as they look to put last season's misery behind them and look towards a brighter future.
