Brighton are continuing to make moves for central defenders amid their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur star Luka Vuskovic.

The Croatian defender earned plenty of acclaim during his loan spell for Hamburg in the Bundesliga in 2025-2026.

Top European sides such as Bayern Munich and Barcelona have been keeping tabs on the 19-year-old.

However, it is Brighton that have emerged with the most concrete interest within the first week of the transfer window opening.

Fabian Hurzeler's side are looking to add defensive reinforcements after losing multiple backline players already and has sent two bids for the Spurs man.

And now they look to be securing their first signing of the window after agreeing to activate a release clause.

Which release clause have Brighton activated amid talks for Luka Vuskovic

Luckily for Tottenham, Vuskovic does not have a release clause, meaning they will not be forced to sell the highly-rated defender.

However, Brighton have taken advantage of one elsewhere throughout Europe as their business continues to ramp up.

According to Sky Sports News, Brighton are verging on the signing of Austrian defender Michael Svoboda.

The 27-year-old had a release clause of around £4million in his Venezia contract, with Brighton agreeing to activate it.

It would mark Hurzeler's first signing of the summer, but for Tottenham, questions will remain on what it could mean for their interest in Vuskovic.

Does Brighton's signing of Michael Svoboda affect their Vuskovic pursuit?

When it comes to Brighton's pursuit of Vuskovic, the arrival of Svoboda does not change much.

The Seagulls are looking to bring in several centre-backs after already selling Jan Paul van Hecke to Tottenham.

Additionally, Adam Webster has left on a free, meaning they require at least two central defenders.

In likelihood, Svoboda is the Webster replacement, with a player of Vuskovic's ilk more likely to come in and take van Hecke's place in the squad.

The latest from Sky Sports shares that the Premier League side are still waiting to hear back from Tottenham over their most recent offer for the Croatian.

Reports have suggested that fee is £45m in total, including add-ons, which is quite a substantial amount given Vuskovic has yet to play a professional game for Tottenham.

But amid plenty of European interest in the defender, Tottenham may feel they could squeeze more out of a deal.

Tottenham already know Brighton have the money to splurge on a central defender after purchasing van Hecke for £52m, leaving them in a strong negotiating position.
