Alejo Veliz lined up for Tottenham exit, ‘dream signing’ for Angel di Maria’s club

Alejo Veliz’s underwhelming Tottenham career could be set to come to a permanent end.

Tottenham have successfully brought in a wealth of young players in the last two years, as Ange Postecoglou has been tasked with rejuvenating the playing squad.

Mikey Moore’s rise from the academy and Lucas Bergvall’s development have been the Australian’s success stories, though not all of the signings have flourished.

Veliz arrived in August 2023 from Rosario with plenty of promise, but after failing to make an impression at Hotspur Way or on loan, the striker looks destined for a future away from North London.

Rosario dream of bringing Veliz back to Argentina

Postecoglou sparsely utilised Veliz in his first six months at Tottenham before deciding the Argentine needed more experience in European football to ready himself for the rigours of the Premier League.

Veliz first went on loan to Sevilla in January 2024, where the 21-year-old hardly played any minutes, before switching to Espanyol last summer.

Despite getting more game time at the Catalan club, Veliz still struggled in front of goal, with three of his four goals coming in the Copa Del Rey against lower league opposition.

As such, Espanyol are not set to sign the striker on a permanent deal. However, Tottenham are still willing to let Veliz leave.

According to Esteban Edul via X (29 May), Rosario dream of bringing Veliz back to his boyhood club and will soon start their pursuit, having already secured Di Maria’s sensational return.

Spurs must prioritise a striker this summer

Tottenham have a strong young core of players coming through in pretty much every position other than up front.

This campaign proved they are very reliant on Dominic Solanke, who has had to carry most of the burden on his shoulders, with Richarlison spending the majority of the season on the sidelines.

Dane Scarlett has never truly earned Postecoglou’s trust, and with Veliz on his way out, Spurs must dedicate a healthy portion of their budget to bring in a proven goalscorer to lead the line.
