'After watching Tynan Thompson at Tottenham, this is what I think of his Man United move'

Tottenham's sale of Tynan Thompson is a brilliant piece of business.

That is the verdict from Spurs expert John Wenham, after his move to Manchester United was confirmed.

The Lilywhites confirmed that he had departed, with various reports putting the figure at £4million, with an extra £4m in add-ons.

It will be a shame to lose one of their brightest talents, but Wenham believes that it makes sense.

There are a combination of factors that led to his departure, that should make it palatable for supporters.

Wenham can see why Spurs took the deal, as the financial aspect is too good to refuse.

The Lilywhite Rose account owner, who focuses on the academy, has opened up on the reasoning for the exit, praising the club while highlighting the one concern that may linger.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “You've got to look at it two ways.

"The one way is that from a purely financial point of view, it is an outstanding deal.

“This is £8m all-in for a guy that has never kicked a ball for Tottenham.

“However, I've watched Tynan more than most people and I think he has got a better chance than many other academy players of actually breaking through and playing in the Premier League.

“Young players are a gamble, but, with Tynan, the key thing was that he didn't want to extend his contract because he only had 11 months left on it.

“Primarily, he wanted a change of scenery, he's grown up in London, he came from Lambeth, Lambeth Tigers was the youth club that Tottenham signed him from and unfortunately his father passed away last year and I think the family want that clean slate.

“Tynan is someone I've watched many times and I think he's an outstanding prospect but always the issue was that we had him and Mikey Moore both coming through on that left-hand side with only one year's age difference between them.

“If he turns out to be something unbelievable, then it will look like a low fee in years to come, but for where he is now, as a young prospect, it's a good deal for Tottenham at that figure.”

Why Tottenham's sale of Thompson makes sense

Ultimately, as Wenham states, the money is great for Spurs right now.

Roberto De Zerbi has been trying to improve his side by bringing in top-quality players.

There is no room for young players who are not good enough to feature at the moment, which is why Luka Vuskovic was allowed to depart and Lucas Bergvall may also leave.

Given that fact, Thompson was never likely to be handed his chance in N17 anytime soon, and they will only regret it, if he becomes a star.
