Tottenham wait on Cristian Romero transfer as door opens for Aymeric Laporte

Tottenham could lose several big names this summer as they prepare to fight on all fronts next season.

Son Heung-min’s future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is in doubt as he enters the final year of his contract.

Elsewhere, Cristian Romero has been constantly linked with a move away from Spurs, with Atletico Madrid his main admirers.

Now, there is news that a decision on his future will have a knock-on effect with Al-Nassr centre-back Aymeric Laporte.

Romero’s Atletico move to influence Laporte future

Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News that Spurs will either agree a new contract with Romero or allow him to leave this summer.

The Argentine has been the subject of long-term interest from the La Liga side, who were keen on him before the end of the season.

However, now that Tottenham are a Champions League club, there is some chance the 27-year-old might remain with Thomas Frank’s side.

Romero made 18 Premier League appearances last season in a campaign that was significantly hampered by injury.

Now, the World Cup winner’s future will influence that of Spain international Laporte, according to Foot Mercato (4 July).

The French outlet reports that if Atletico fail in their pursuit of Romero, then the door could be open for Laporte to join Colchoneros.

If Laporte wants to be a part of Spain’s World Cup squad, then the Spanish Football Federation believe he must leave Saudi Arabia and return to Europe.

Tottenham must only sell Romero for sizeable fee

While there is understandable interest in Romero, Spurs should only sell him for a substantial fee.

The centre-back is in his prime at 27 and has World Cup and Europa League winners’ medals to his name.

It has been reported that Daniel Levy will slap a £60million price tag on Romero’s head, which seems like a fair price.

Furthermore, Romero could hand in a transfer request at Tottenham to push through a move out of North London.

Along with Micky van de Ven, Romero is Spurs’ most talented centre-back, and they will need significant funds to replace him.

Whatever happens, the Lilywhites must stand firm on their asking price for the Argentinian international.
