Tottenham ‘turn to Milan Skriniar’ after shock Cristian Romero exit news

Tottenham could be set for some major changes this summer, and they may lose some key players after a hugely disappointing campaign.

Spurs are currently 14th in the Premier League, with Ange Postecoglou under huge pressure to keep his job beyond the end of the season.

Unless Spurs win the Europa League, they are set to miss out on European football entirely, and this could result in some key departures.

Defender Cristian Romero has been linked with a shock exit, and should the Argentinian leave, Spurs have reportedly lined up a replacement.

Spurs line up Skriniar as Romero replacement

Romero has been linked with a big-money move away, with clubs including Real Madrid reportedly interested in the World Cup winner.

If the 26-year-old does leave, it would be a huge blow for Tottenham, and they are now seemingly targeting an experienced replacement.

Turkish outlet Sabah report via its print edition (30 March) that Fenerbahce Skriniar is “on Tottenham’s list” as a potential Romero replacement.

The report also claims that Romero is “expected to leave” this summer, with it now apparent that Spurs are planning for life without the centre-back.

Milan Skriniar a long-term target for Tottenham

Thirty-year-old defender Skriniar is currently playing for Fenerbahce on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, but he has actually been on Tottenham’s radar for a long time.

Skriniar was linked with Tottenham while playing for Inter Milan in 2020, but a move never materialised.

The Slovakia international moved to PSG on a free transfer in July 2023, but he fell out of favour in France before a surprising move to Fenerbahce in the summer.

It remains to be seen what kind of fee will be needed to land the defender, who would bring a lot of experience to the Spurs back line, but losing Romero would be a huge blow for Tottenham.

If the Argentina international does depart, it sends a message that key players at the club are fed up of a lack of progress, and this would make it more difficult to convince top-quality players to join in the short-term future.
