Tottenham transfer twist: Spurs in shock transfer U-turn after £21.5m agreement

Tottenham will inevitably make major changes to their squad after what has been an underwhelming season.

Spurs are currently placed 14th in the Premier League and risk not having UEFA Champions League football next season unless they win the Europa League.

One of the biggest decisions Daniel Levy will make when the season draws to a close is whether or not Ange Postecoglou deserves to continue as Tottenham’s manager.

The Spurs chairman will also be busy in the transfer market, with several players expected to move in and out of the North London club.

Seven first-team players notably have their contracts with Tottenham running out at the end of the season.

Tottenham in Johnny Carodoso twist

The midfielder is an area that will need to be addressed, as Rodrigo Bentancur is already considering his future with the Premier League club amid interest from Atletico Madrid.

Johnny Cardoso is a player Spurs could rope in to bolster their options in midfielder, having agreed a £21.5million preferential buy option with Real Betis during Giovani Lo Celso’s move in the opposite direction last year.

The United States international has had a strong season with Betis this time, and it would not be a surprise if Postecoglou’s side triggered their option to sign him.

However, they would still need to convince Cardoso of the move to North London, according to Relevo.

The Spanish news outlet reported via their website on Tuesday (8 April) that the 23-year-old’s entourage has already received interest from clubs more appealing than Spurs.

Cardoso’s agents are aware of clubs willing to fork out more than the £21.5m sum that the Lilywhites have agreed to pay, with offers expected to come in towards June.

Spurs could miss out on Cardoso despite Betis agreement

Another big hurdle in front of Tottenham is the fact that Real Betis remain hopeful of keeping Cardoso beyond this season.

As the final decision is in the midfielder’s hands, the La Liga club hope to use the Champions League as bait to retain his services.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side are currently placed sixth in La Liga, but are still in a better position than Tottenham to qualify for the Champions League.
