Tottenham ‘to accelerate Wissa transfer’ as striker returns to England for talks

Thomas Frank is keen to reunite with Yoane Wissa at Tottenham this summer.

Wissa has been highly sought after this summer after scoring a career-high 20 goals in all competitions for Brentford last season.

The race for the Democratic Republic of Congo international looks to be heating up, with Newcastle reportedly enquiring about the striker after seemingly missing out on Hugo Ekitike.

And Wissa could be closer than ever to completing a move away from the Bees after a recent update.

Wissa leaves Brentford’s training camp in Portugal

It has been reported that Brentford would be unwilling to sanction a departure for Wissa after Bryan Mbuemo joined Manchester United.

Frank is still eager to improve in the final third this summer after Mohammed Kudus’ £55million arrival from West Ham, and the Lilywhites could be one step closer to doing so.

Wissa was immense last season

As reported by BBC Sport on Tuesday (22 July), Brentford forward Wissa has left Brentford’s pre-season base in Portugal to return to England.

The striker will now hold talks with Brentford director of football Phil Giles, with Tottenham joined by Newcastle and Nottingham Forest in the race for the striker’s signature.

The outcome of the talks are likely to create a clearer picture of whether he will stay with the Bees.

With competition fierce, and a move for Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White stalling, Spurs could focus their attention on accelerating their pursuit of Wissa after this latest update.

Tottenham must avoid a bidding war for Wissa

Newcastle failed to sign Ekitike. As a result, they will be eager to land a new striker and not be outbid again in the transfer window.

Therefore, Spurs must ensure that they don’t get into a bidding war with the Magpies, otherwise they face potentially paying over the odds for Wissa.

At 28, Wissa wouldn’t be worth paying a premium for, and with the Lilywhites’ defence in need of strengthening, Frank should turn his head elsewhere.

Tottenham had a leaky defence last season with constant injuries and a lack of depth, leading to a very poor Premier League campaign.
