‘Tottenham succumb to Romero exit’ as Maxim Esteve update emerges at Burnley

Cristian Romero looks likely to be one of several players to leave Tottenham this summer.

Tottenham have found plenty of success through the signing of Romero back in 2022, though it appears as though his time is coming to an end this summer.

The Argentine played a crucial role in Spurs’ Europa League triumph last campaign, but rumours over an exit to Atletico Madrid have persisted throughout the summer.

With that in mind, it seems as though Spurs have already accepted defeat in their attempts to keep him in North London, with an update emerging on Burnley defender Maxim Esteve.

Esteve in concrete talks with Tottenham ahead of transfer

If Romer does leave, Spurs will bank a significant fee, though most of it will have to be used to seal the arrival of his replacement.

That could turn out to be Esteve, after it was reported by Gianluca Di Marzio via X (8 July) that Tottenham are now in concrete talks with the Frenchman over a potential summer move.

Romero has been a key player at Tottenham since 2022

Esteve shone for the Clarets in the Championship last season and was briefly linked with a move to North London midway through the campaign.

That move failed to materialise, but it could be back on the cards again this summer, and if that were to happen, it would surely spell the end for Romero.

Reports since the news broke claim that nothing is advanced, though it wouldn’t be a surprise to see that change in the near future.

Tottenham must shop more in the Championship

Esteve is, of course, a Premier League player now, but all of this interest stems from his displays in the second tier.

He isn’t the only top player to have emerged from the EFL, with Spurs’ own Archie Gary following a similar path, and several others doing the same over the last few years.

Tottenham can find some absolute steals via scouting in the lower leagues, while also bolstering their squad in the process.
