Tottenham set to complete record-breaking transfer after deadline

Tottenham are set to sign Mason Melia from St Pat’s for £1.6million, according to Tom Barclay.

The Sun journalist reported on 4 February that Spurs are on the verge of signing the 17-year-old from League of Ireland Premier Division outfit.

The Lilywhites will have to wait until January 2026 to bring the forward to North London due to Brexit rules which means he can’t sign until after his 18th birthday.

The £1.6m fee will make the “Irish wonderkid” the first player signed for seven figures in the history of the Irish leagues.

Tottenham to complete record-breaking Mason Melia deal

Ange Postecoglou’s side proved in the last summer window that they aren’t scared to spend large sums on young players and give them first team opportunities.

Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall are excellent examples of this given how many minutes they have played in the Premier League this season.

This has clearly made the Lilywhites an attractive prospect for emerging talents and Melia looks to be the latest to be coming through the doors.

Given his “wonderkid” status and the money that Spurs are dropping to sign him, there is obviously a lot of excitement around Melia and his potential.

It is frustrating that the North London outfit have to wait until 2026 to land his signature but is certainly a sign of intent to get a deal done this far in advance.
