Tottenham ready new contract offer after Atletico Madrid transfer twist

Tottenham could undergo significant squad changes in the summer, with several players linked with exits after a shocking season.

The North London club have struggled massively, and there is a chance of them missing out on European football next season. In such an instance, some players could look to leave.

The Spurs hierarchy also needs to decide on contract extensions for some of their important players, like Son Heung-min, who will have just one year left when they enter the summer.

It appears that Spurs have started to act in terms of player renewals, being wary of the fact that wholesale changes could occur.

Tottenham to open Rodrigo Bentancur talks

Rodrigo Bentancur has attracted interest from Atletico Madrid. The Uruguay international joined Spurs in 2022 and, since then, has become a regular part of the midfield.

Bentancur’s contract expires in 2026 and is one of the most attractive midfield names that could be available for free next summer if Tottenham fail to tie him down to a new deal.

This term, the 27-year-old has played 32 games, operating efficiently in the midfield and also adding three goal contributions to his name.

Tottenham are not prepared to let Bentancur leave as they are keen to keep the Uruguayan in North London beyond 2026.

According to TEAMtalk, the North London outfit are to open formal talks about a contract extension, with an expectation that a decision will be reached soon amid interest from two European giants – AC Milan and Atletico Madrid.

Exploratory talks about a new deal between the player’s camp and Spurs have already taken place as the midfielder continues to attract interest.

Spurs must tie Bentancur to a new deal

Regardless of who the Tottenham manager is next season, a player of Bentancur’s calibre is rare to find and can be a huge asset.

He has been a reliable performer for the Lilywhites and will continue to provide solidity in midfield.

Tying him down to a new deal is vital as Spurs are expected to make midfield changes in the summer, and an experienced player like Bentancur is necessary to have.

Staving off interest from clubs like Atletico may not be easy, especially when they can offer Champions League football regularly, but Bentancur looks well settled in North London, and if an ambitious sporting project is presented to him, he will not think of leaving Spurs.
