Tottenham mooted to beat Newcastle to Guéhi transfer after Maddison development

Tottenham could once again look to sign Crystal Palace captain Marc Guéhi this summer.

Ange Postecoglou’s side made a late attempt to sign Guéhi in the winter transfer window, but Palace stood strong, and the centre-back remained at Selhurst Park.

However, Guéhi will have just one year left on his contract at the end of the season.

Therefore, the England international will likely be a target for Premier League clubs this summer, with Tottenham expected to make a fresh approach.

Tottenham could repeat James Maddison transfer trick

There is a strong chance of Cristian Romero leaving Tottenham this summer, especially as the World Cup winner has already agreed terms on a five-year contract with Atletico Madrid [Sébastien Vidal].

Therefore, a replacement will be needed, and Guéhi could be that man.

While discussing Spurs’ transfer plans on The View From The Lane (5 May), The Athletic’s James Maw suggested that the North London club could face competition from Newcastle, but doesn’t see why the Lilywhites can’t overcome this, just as they did when they signed Maddison.

Maw said, “With Guéhi, Newcastle United will likely still be interested, and which European competition they qualify for will be a factor.

“But when Spurs signed Maddison from Leicester City in 2023, they were up against Newcastle, and we thought that meant it wouldn’t happen, but it did. So what’s to say history doesn’t repeat there?”

Tottenham could beat Newcastle to Guéhi’s signature

Guéhi would be a fantastic signing for Tottenham

If Romero does leave Tottenham, Daniel Levy will need to sign a replacement.

Kevin Danso has proven himself to be a reliable squad option since he arrived at Tottenham. However, the 26-year-old is not of the same quality as Romero, and Micky van de Ven will need a more reliable centre-back partner.

Guéhi could be exactly that. At 24, the Palace star is still relatively young, but also boasts plenty of experience in the Premier League.

If Newcastle qualify for Europe and Spurs don’t, that could cause a problem. However, the Lilywhites were able to overcome this same barrier when they signed Maddison, and with Guéhi already living in London, that could prove to be a crucial factor.

Therefore, Spurs must ensure they go all out to sign Guéhi this summer.
