Tottenham may be step closer to Raheem Sterling deal as big transfer clue drops

Raheem Sterling has become a fascinating free agent option ahead of Monday’s deadline.

The 31-year-old winger terminated his Chelsea contract by mutual consent earlier this week, which has piqued the interest of a host of clubs.

Sterling has been touted as a potential Tottenham target, as Thomas Frank desperately searches for some last-minute deals ahead of Monday’s deadline.

Moussa Diaby has been linked with Spurs, whilst Tottenham have reportedly enquired about the availability of Serge Gnabry, with Frank seemingly exploring all options to bolster his forward line.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are also pushing to sign Leon Goretzka from Bayern Munich, with the experienced midfielder seemingly available for a move before the window shuts.

Raheem Sterling transfer clue could point towards Tottenham

With just Conor Gallagher and Souza making up Tottenham‘s only new signings this winter, many Spurs fans are far from pleased with the lack of new arrivals.

The insecurity levels regarding Frank’s future in N17 probably haven’t helped Tottenham’s transfer planning either, in what has been an underwhelming winter window to this point.

However, there is still time for that to change, and should one or two of those aforementioned names sign on at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before the deadline, then opinions on Spurs’ window may swiftly change.

And whilst supporters will understandably want to see Tottenham splash the cash before the window closes, the importance of doing shrewd business can’t be forgotten.

Sterling has got bags of Premier League experience under his belt, and despite having not been as productive over the last few years, he could still be a very smart signing for someone like Spurs.

And, in an update reported by Sky Sports, Sterling’s team are understood to be in talks with up to seven Champions League level sides who would like to sign him.

Tottenham would obviously fit that description, as they progressed automatically to the last 16 by finishing fourth in the league phase of the Champions League.

Why Sterling could make a lot of sense for Tottenham and vice versa

At this stage of his career, Sterling will not only simply want to play regular football, but it’s also perhaps unlikely that he’d be overly willing to massively relocate.

He’s been in London since signing for Chelsea in the summer of 2022, and he’s never played his domestic football outside the Premier League.

Therefore, staying in the capital with Tottenham could be a very attractive proposition for him, as it would mean he wouldn’t need to up sticks.

As for Spurs, their chances of finishing of qualifying for European football via the Premier League have all but gone now this season, and instead, their goal will be to try and get back amongst the top half.

On a short-term deal, Sterling could really help them do that, and with injuries to the likes of Richarlison and Mohammed Kudus, he may well have a real shot at carving out a key role in N17.
