Tottenham make Timo Werner decision as new transfer already considered

Tottenham have made up their mind on signing Timo Werner from RB Leipzig permanently despite his loan contract running until June.

Werner earned himself a season-long loan at Tottenham after impressing on a shorter stint last season, with the Premier League club also agreeing to a £8.5million buy option.

Spurs, therefore, gave the Germany international a second bite at the cherry in England after his flop spell at Chelsea between 2020 and 2022.

The 28-year-old, meanwhile, is yet to score for Ange Postecoglou’s side in the Premier League this season, with his only goal coming in a 2-1 win against Manchester City in the EFL Cup in October.

Tottenham do not want to buy Timo Werner

Tottenham have no intention of making Timo Werner‘s loan move permanent in the summer, according to Bild.

The German newspaper reported via their website on Tuesday (18 February) that the attacker will return to RB Leipzig when his loan deal expires in the summer.

However, as one of the biggest earners at the Bundesliga club at around £9.1m a year, Werner does not have a future there either.

Leipzig’s sister club New York Red Bulls have, therefore, been mooted as the ‘perfect launching pad’ for the former Chelsea ace.

While claims about talks over a transfer to New York in the winter transfer window have been rubbished, Werner is certainly open to a transfer to the MLS.

Timo Werner, a Daniel Levy flop

Werner made a positive impact when he initially arrived in North London, bagging two goals and three assists in 13 Premier League appearances in the second half of last season.

However, the German’s performances this season have left much to be desired and it is understandable why Spurs do not want to buy him even for a cut-price fee of £8.5m.

Werner is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, but with Mathys Tel arriving as a winter signing, he will find playing time hard to come by between now and the end of the season.
