Tottenham ‘leading the way’ for Morten Hjulmand as Sporting set for January ‘headaches’

Tottenham could be about to add Morten Hjulmand to their squad in the January transfer window.

The Lilywhites have made a mixed start to the new Premier League season, and are expected to continue to overhaul their squad upon the opening of the winter window.

Hjulmand was heavily linked with Tottenham over the summer, and it is clear that their interest hasn’t faded at all during the early stages of the new campaign.

Thomas Frank is beginning to stamp his imprint on the squad in N17, and he may be about to welcome a fellow countryman into his group if he gets his way this winter.

Sporting expect a bid for Morten Hjulmand amid £69.7m valuation

Tottenham were thought to be preparing a bid for Hjulmand in the summer, although they ultimately never made a concrete offer to Sporting CP for their star.

Joao Palhinha has earned plenty of plaudits for his displays at the heart of the midfield so far this term, but that doesn’t look like it will prevent the Lilywhites from targeting another addition in the middle of the park.

Their interest in Hjulmand still remains, and they are understood to be “leading the way” for the Denmark international at the moment, alongside Manchester United, according to Portuguese outlet Record.

Sporting are aware of the interest in the 26-year-old and are expecting to face an offer for him this time around.

They are expecting “headaches” regarding the future of their star man, but they are also keen to ensure that the £69.7million release clause in Hjulmand’s contract is adhered to if a sale is to take place.

Tottenham need to focus on Joao Palhinha signing instead

Palhinha has been a key figure for Tottenham so far this season, and it already looks like a masterstroke for them to have secured his services on a season-long loan deal.

The North Londoners have the option to trigger the Portuguese’s permanent arrival for a fee of around £27m, and it already fails like a no-brainer for them to take up that option.

The 30-year-old has held such an influence over their play this season that he could easily be their best addition this winter, regardless of who else they sign.

Triggering the clause in the deal for Palhinha has to be the top priority for Spurs, and if that means that they don’t add another option to their midfield, then that would surely still be satisfactory for Frank.

Hjulmand is certainly an interesting target for the N17 outfit, but everybody connected to the club would surely rather see Palhinha extend his stay.
