Tottenham confirm exit of defender to Burnley as announcement made

Tottenham had a very underwhelming winter transfer window and they have now announced another player exit.

Brennan Johnson moved from Tottenham to Crystal Palace last month, after falling down the pecking order under Thomas Frank.

The 24-year-old was top scorer for the Lilywhites last season, as well as grabbing the winner in the Europa League final.

Spurs did make some signings of their own, bringing in Conor Gallagher and Souza, but they are still light in attacking areas after the departure of Johnson.

Tottenham January done deals

Roman Egan-Riley leaves Tottenham

While Spurs didn’t get much business done in terms of their senior side, they made a number of additions to their academy ranks in the winter window.

James Wilson joined from Hearts on deadline day, coming in on an initial loan deal with Tottenham holding an option to buy next summer.

The North London side also brought in Mason Melia, Elisha Sowunmi, and Joel Vidal-Philbert.

Despite the window closing last Monday, there has now been some more transfer movement in the youth team.

On Friday morning, Tottenham confirmed that Roman Egan-Riley has joined Burnley on a permanent transfer.

Academy players are not bound by transfer windows and can move at any time of the year, allowing the deal to be sanctioned after the deadline.

Who is Roman Egan-Riley?

Egan-Riley moved from Manchester City to Spurs in the summer of 2024, at the age of just 16.

The centre-back made 17 appearances across various age groups during his two and a half years in North London.

Egan-Riley has featured mostly for the under-18 side throughout his time at Tottenham, making the occasional appearance in Premier League 2 for the under-21s this season.

However, the 19-year-old has spent the last two weeks on loan with Burnley and has now completed a permanent switch to Turf Moor.

In an official statement on their website on Friday, Tottenham wished Egan-Riley all the best for his future.
