Tottenham close in on next January signing as star refuses to play for current club
Tottenham are closing in on securing their second signing of the January window.
Mason Melia completed his switch to Tottenham from St. Patrick’s on 1 January, although the transfer had already been confirmed back in February 2025.
There has also been movement out the door in North London, as Brennan Johnson joined Crystal Palace for a reported fee of £35million.
Now, Thomas Frank’s side have taken a big step towards another addition, as the Dane looks to reinforce his squad for the second half of the season.
Tottenham prepare new bid for unsettled Souza
Tottenham have already seen bids rejected for Santos left-back Souza in recent weeks, and they are now preparing another improved offer.
The 19-year-old has a huge £87.1m release clause in his contract, but Spurs are looking to bring him to North London for far less than that.
According to ESPN Brazil, Tottenham have indicated that they are ready to make a £13m bid for the full-back, which should be enough to get the deal over the line.
With negotiations in an advanced stage, Souza has informed Santos that he does not want to be involved in their match against Novorizontino on 10 January.
It seems that the Brazilian now has his sights set on a switch to Spurs, and is prepared to put his foot down until a bid is accepted.
Souza incoming surely hints at one Tottenham player’s departure
While Souza is perhaps not expected to slot into the starting lineup immediately at left-back, the plan will surely be to integrate him into the team over time.
Tottenham currently have Djed Spence and Destiny Udogie in that position, as well as veteran defender Ben Davies.
Davies’ contract with Spurs only runs until the end of this season, and there has been no word on whether the North London side will extend his deal.
With Souza expected to join in the coming days, it could signal the end of the 32-year-old’s time with the Lilywhites.
Davies did score for Tottenham in the draw against Sunderland, but has played just two Premier League matches this season, and Frank may be wanting to move on.
