Tottenham and Burnley’s transfer spends so far as Premier League opener days away

Tottenham will be itching to get their Premier League campaign up and running with a win as they take on Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

The Lilywhites have gone through something of a transition this summer, as the reign of Thomas Frank has begun.

Spurs suffered an agonising UEFA Super Cup defeat on Wednesday night, as they conceded two late goals to squander a lead and ultimately lose on penalties.

They will be gunning to put that defeat right when they return to competitive domestic action at the weekend, and with that in mind, Tottenham News compares the North Londoners’ summer transfer spend to that of their opponents.

Tottenham and Burnley have spent similar amounts this summer

Tottenham are now eyeing up Eberechi Eze as their next potential big-money star following a series of eye-catching transfer links so far this summer.

However, as of yet, Mohammed Kudus remains their most expensive purchase at around £55million.

The Lilywhites have already completed six deals, but that includes a loan agreement for Joao Palhinha, and permanent moves for former loanees Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso.

Youngster Kota Takai has also joined the ranks, while Luka Vuskovic has finally become a Tottenham player.

Altogether, that takes Spurs’ spend to around the £124m mark, according to Transfermarkt.

Somewhat surprisingly, their opponents on Saturday have spent a very similar amount, with Burnley’s summer outlay currently standing at around £107m.

Spurs’ transfer spend could jump astronomically in the coming weeks

Daniel Levy knows that Tottenham now need further reinforcements following the departure of Son Heung-min and the injury to James Maddison.

The Lilywhites chief simply cannot afford to allow Frank to go weeks into the new campaign without adequate replacements for two hugely important players.

As a result, he will likely be left with no choice but to get the chequebook out once again, which could spark an astronomical rise in Spurs’ spending.

Levy has his eyes fixed on Eze, and that deal could cost around £70m alone.

When you then factor in the need to replace Son as well, it is entirely possible that Tottenham’s spend could be about to double before the 1 September deadline.
