Tottenham ‘already have Son replacement’ amid £40m+ exit bombshell

Son Heung-min potentially being on his way out of Tottenham this summer could be alleviated by the arrival of a fellow Premier League star.

The Tottenham captain has been linked with a move away from North London this summer after 10 seasons with Spurs, with clubs in Saudi Arabia willing to pay north of £40million for the South Korean.

Son has been Spurs’ skipper since in 2023 and recently signed a new contract, but the 32-year-old has experienced a downturn in form this term and is on-track for his lowest-scoring season since 2015/16.

With Tottenham readying themselves for transfer bids to arrive in the summer, a potential replacement for Son has already been identified in the form of a player Tottenham have a long-term interest in.

Tottenham ready for £62m Matheus Cunha transfer battle

Son departing Tottenham may pave the way for the Lilywhites to beat Chelsea and Arsenal to the signing of Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, with Fichajes reporting (24 February) that the trio are all keen on him.

Cunha, 25, recently signed a new contract at Molineux which includes a £62million release clause, and after scoring 13 Premier League goals this season, Tottenham are “seriously considering” activating it.

Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal have all made contact with Cunha, and while this Spanish report states the striker can “complement” Son, he could instead become the South Korean’s long-term replacement.

Matheus Cunha move a no-brainer for Tottenham

With Son now 32 years old and showing signs this season that his career at the highest level is coming towards its conclusion, Spurs bringing in Cunha as a direct alternative would be a shrewd transfer coup.

Beating their two biggest rivals to the Brazilian’s signature would not only give Tottenham an immediate advantage, but they’d also be bringing in a very versatile player capable of operating across the frontline.

While Son has made the left wing his own during his time in North London, and as a makeshift striker if needs must, Cunha has operated both through the middle and out wide throughout his time at Wolves.

Having 13 goals and four assists in 25 Premier League games this season – after 19 goal contributions in 32 matches last term – is an impressive tally, and dwarfs the goalscoring levels Son is currently posting.

A £62m outlay would see Tottenham come close to breaking their transfer record, but if that’s offset by selling Son for north of £40m, signing Cunha to replace their long-term stalwart is a no-brainer.
