Tottenham advance in talks to sign Andy Robertson in late winter swoop
Tottenham have made a shock move for Liverpool defender Andy Robertson as they look to strengthen their backline.
Spurs have already made two signings in the winter transfer window, bringing in Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid and Souza from Santos.
Brazilian left-back Souza completed his switch to North London on Thursday evening, but is clearly viewed as a prospect for the future.
It means that Thomas Frank still needs to address the immediate concerns in that position after Ben Davies suffered a broken ankle in Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham United last Saturday.
Tottenham closing in on Andy Robertson deal
Robertson has been linked with a Liverpool exit over the last six months, and was the subject of an approach from Atletico Madrid last summer.
The veteran left-back has dropped down the pecking order under Arne Slot since the arrival of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, and has only started four Premier League games all season.
According to David Ornstein, Tottenham are now working on a deal to sign Robertson before the transfer deadline, with negotiations between all parties advancing.
Spurs initially planned to bring in the Scot in the summer window, with his contract at Anfield expiring at the end of this season.
However, their pursuit of Robertson has been brought forward in an attempt to immediately strengthen the squad.
Andy Robertson move confirms Thomas Frank’s future
Tottenham got back to winning ways with a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday evening, boosting themselves up into the top eight of the Champions League group phase.
Frank remains under huge sack pressure though, with the Lilywhites sitting down in 14th in the Premier League table.

However, the fact that the Spurs hierarchy are willing to bring forward their approach for Robertson shows the Dane still has internal support.
The Scotland international has made over 300 top-flight appearances and has been a key figure in Premier League and Champions League-winning sides, so will add some welcome experience to the Tottenham squad.
Frank will be hoping the deal for Robertson is sealed in the coming days so the defender can make an immediate impact in North London.
