Ryan Mason to sign Pochettino favourite for West Brom
Ryan Mason is stamping his mark on his West Brom team ahead of the new Championship season.
The Baggies have already signed the likes of Nat Phillips and Aune Heggebø, but are about to seal another significant transfer.
United States international George Campbell is joining the West Midlands outfit from MLS side Montreal for a deal worth around £1.9million, according to The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath (17 July).
He says that Mason has landed the player firmly in the plans of former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.
West Brom close in on Campbell capture
Campbell was recently excluded from Montreal’s squad to face Orlando City so he could pursue a move to The Hawthorns.
The centre back has made 16 appearances in the MLS season, but is now set to swap the USA for England.
George Campbell’s 2025 MLS statistics | Total |
Appearances (starts) | 16 (15) |
Assists | 1 |
Clean sheets | 2 |
Total duels won | 4.8 (61%) |
Clearances | 4.2 |
Tackles per game | 2 |
There had been reports that Campbell could only cost West Brom £1million, but it appears they will have to pay slightly more.
The 24-year-old made his international debut under Pochettino in January in a 3-1 victory over Venezuela during an international friendly.
Campbell had to settle for a place on the bench in the following match against Costa Rica, where the USA ran out 3-0 winners.
The defender has not featured in any of Pochettino’s squads since, although he is seemingly in the manager’s plans.

Campbell to bolster Mason’s Baggies defence
Mason was short on centre backs when he arrived at The Hawthorns, but now he is set to possess several quality options.
Last season, Kyle Bartley and Torbjørn Heggem featured heavily under West Brom’s various managers.
However, with Phillips already signed and Campbell closing in on a move, Mason can field a new look defence next season.
Whether or not Mason and Pochettino held discussions over Campbell remains to be seen, but if they did, then Tottenham’s former boss could have played a pivotal role in the transfer going through.
