‘Romero exit still on the cards’ at Tottenham as Atletico Madrid priority emerges

Cristian Romero’s future as a Tottenham player has been up in the air since the previous campaign.

July looks set to be the busiest month of the year for Tottenham, with a number of incomings expected, and potentially even more outgoings to follow.

Following the arrival of Mohammed Kudus, Spurs may still be looking to tie up a deal for Morgan Gibbs-White, while plenty of their other focus will be on players currently at the club.

Romero is one to have been heavily linked with an exit from Tottenham, with a new update emerging on Atleti’s pursuit of the Argentine.

Tottenham could still lose Romero to Atletico Madrid

Talks between Tottenham and Atleti stalled recently, though a report shared in the print edition of Mundo Deportivo (14 July, pg28) states that the transfer is not yet ruled out.

However, the move has stalled because Tottenham are reluctant to sell one of their prized assets, with hopes of progressing next season.

Atletico Madrid are currently looking at other options in case an agreement cannot be reached, though it does suggest that the interest will not go away just yet, with the Argentine believed to be a priority for the La Liga outfit.

As for Spurs, they need to do all they can to keep Romero in North London; otherwise, they face a near-impossible task of replacing him with just over a month until the Premier League campaign gets underway.

Thomas Frank needs to see Spurs retain their key players

If Tottenham are going to progress next season, adding more quality to the squad will be a necessity, and taking quality away from it will have a huge impact, and not a good one.

Romero is arguably the most important player for Spurs, and to find someone to replace his influence wouldn’t be easy, nor would it be cheap.

There is still plenty of time to secure those arrivals before the season starts, with plenty of twists likely to come in the next few weeks.
