Rodrigo Bentancur ‘already packing his bags at Tottenham’ after confirmed exit news

Rodrigo Bentancur’s time at Tottenham appears to be drawing to a close after a major exit update.

Ange Postecoglou has been vocal in his admiration for the midfielder, but with the manager’s future looking increasingly uncertain, Tottenham could make an executive decision on Bentancur.

Spurs are looking to cash in on players this summer, such as Cristian Romero, who has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, to provide funds ahead of the transfer window opening.

Bentancur has also caught the eye of Diego Simeone and could follow his vice-captain in moving to the Spanish capital.

The Uruguay international has seen his stock steadily decrease in North London, but is set to start in the Europa League final against Manchester United, which could be the last time he appears for Spurs.

Angel Gomes ‘in line to replace Bentancur’

Spurs have been aware of interest in Bentancur and appear to have already identified his replacement in Angel Gomes.

The long-term Tottenham target recently announced he would be leaving Lille this summer, which could see Tottenham swoop in for the Manchester United academy graduate.

Both players offer various qualities in midfield, though Gomes’ ability to operate in tight spaces and find quick passes makes him far more suited to the number six role, which has been an issue for Spurs this season.

Three years his junior, Gomes also offers more flexibility than Bentancur, having played in a wider variety of positions in his time at Lille, including across both wings.

Bentancur’s historical off-field issues and injury record have also hampered the Uruguayan’s availability since he joined from Juventus in January 2022.

Therefore, with Spurs now being presented the perfect opportunity to sign Gomes, that could allow them to greenlight Bentancur’s exit.

Bentancur’s role change affected Spurs career

Bentancur was brought to Tottenham as an all-action box-to-box midfielder.

He made a positive impact at Spurs under Antonio Conte before a string of horrific injuries saw him miss almost a year of action.

Postecoglou was in charge by the time the 27-year-old returned, with the Australian mainly utilising the Uruguayan as a holding midfielder.

Restricted to this role and unable to use his on-ball running power, the former Juventus man never reached the standards he had previously set, which could ultimately prove costly to his Spurs career.
