Newcastle United could swoop for player unwanted by Postecoglou at Tottenham

Tottenham are set part ways with a number of first-team players after a terrible domestic campaign, and have already begun the process of clearing out their squad.

Spurs won the Europa League to salvage an otherwise woeful season, which could still see Ange Postecoglou lose his job.

Despite the trophy success, it is clear that Tottenham need a clear-out of the squad, and some big names could depart to help fund a rebuild.

Spurs legend Son Heung-min could be one of these departing players, while several have already left following the expiry of their contracts.

Newcastle eye Fraser Forster after Tottenham exit

Tottenham recently confirmed that out-of-contract goalkeeper Fraser Forster will depart the club this summer, but he may already have a move lined up.

Forster ended up making 13 appearances across all competitions this season as Guglielmo Vicario struggled with injury, which included four starts in the Europa League.

Forster’s stats for Tottenham

The 37-year-old joined Tottenham three years ago, and has provided a lot of experience in the dressing room, but he could now return to the club where he began his career.

Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope has now reported (3 June) that Forster could be a player to keep an eye on with regard to a return to Newcastle, with whom he was in the academy but never made a first-team appearance.

Forster leaves Tottenham after losing place

Forster had been trusted as the main backup to Vicario since the Italian replaced Hugo Lloris, but that changed this season.

When Vicario picked up a long-term injury before the January transfer window, Forster was thrust into the team, but failed to impress and made some high-profile errors.

This then meant Postecoglou signed Antonin Kinsky to replace Forster as the main Vicario backup, and the veteran has not appeared since December.

He could now return to Newcastle as a third-choice option following their return to the Champions League, and this could see him finally appear for them since his permanent transfer to Celtic in 2012 prevented his debut.

Spurs could seek out a different third-choice option, and they may look for someone with a similar level of experience to Forster.
