Manchester City join ‘epic’ transfer race for Tottenham’s top target

Tottenham will face stiff competition from Premier League rivals Manchester City for their top transfer target.

Spurs will be desperate to make amends for last summer’s underwhelming window, which left them ill-equipped to handle 60 games across all competitions.

Ange Postecoglou had to juggle his inexperienced squad, effectively sacking off the Premier League to give his side the best opportunity to win the Europa League, which ultimately proved worthwhile.

The club will be looking to avoid a similar situation next season, and although Daniel Levy will have access to a larger budget to achieve his transfer goals, the Londoners will have to fend off interest from Pep Guardiola’s team.

Man City join race for Lyon’s Rayan Cherki

James Maddison‘s injury woes since his arrival at Spurs in 2023 have prompted the club to prioritise signing a creative player to cover for the England international.

Tottenham earmarked Rayan Cherki as a potential candidate and have already looked into bringing the Lyon playmaker to North London.

They have hit a potential snag as, according to a report in the Telegraph (27 May), Premier League giants have also joined the race, hoping to bring the French midfielder in to replace the outgoing Kevin De Bruyne.

It could make for an epic transfer battle, with two Premier League heavyweights going at it to sign one of Europe’s top talents.

Cherki’s appeal is easy to see, with the versatile France international hitting incredible numbers this season despite playing across six different positions.

The playmaker’s passing range has seen him contribute to 20 assists this season, which is double Maddison’s return, while his dribbling ability also offers a viable alternative on the right to the more goal-scoring orientated Brennan Johnson.

Tottenham need marquee signings to push on

Postecoglou made it known in his final press conference that the club needs to bring in experience in this window to help guide the young squad through the rigours of Champions League football next season.

The strategy of uncovering gems like Lucas Bergvall has been successful, but must now be complemented by bringing in more established players.

Levy must be more proactive in signing players like Cherki, both to give the squad a much-needed injection of quality and also to send a message to other big clubs that Tottenham mean business.
