‘Man City open door for Tottenham to sign Gibbs-White’ after new transfer update

Tottenham are still in hot pursuit of Morgan Gibbs-White, and the doors could finally be opening.

Nottingham Forest are still battling to keep their captain, and were left furious by what they deemed to be an illegal approach from Spurs.

Tottenham are still hopeful of signing the midfielder in a £60million deal, with the presence of a release clause in his contract now publicised.

Gibbs-White was previously courted by Manchester City, and there may have been fears at Spurs that they would try to sign him again.

Man City withdraw from Gibbs-White race

Spurs may have been nervous that Premier League ‘big six’ rivals Man City would reignite their interest in Gibbs-White after the revelation of his release clause, but this will not be the case.

The Manchester Evening News (July 23) have now reported that City have no plans to do so, despite Forest’s new preference to sell to a different club than Spurs.

Evangelos Marinakis is said to prefer a sale to a club like City, with Forest furious at Tottenham’s approach for their captain, but he will have to look elsewhere, as they will not make a bid for him.

This will come as a relief to Tottenham, who will now be confident of securing the 25-year-old’s signature once their issues with Forest are ironed out.

Man City moved on from Gibbs-White

City were interested in Gibbs-White last year, and his outstanding campaign last season may have meant they came back in for him, given his reduced asking price.

However, City elected to sign Rayan Cherki earlier in the window, and have also brought in Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan.

This has meant that with two new players in the positions Gibbs-White may have played in, they no longer need the England international this summer, and this has allowed Spurs to have a free run at him.

Given the situation with Forest, it is possible that Spurs could make a separate bid for the midfielder at a higher price than his release clause, and anything which could help the deal proceed quickly will be welcomed.
