Maddison exit on cards at Tottenham in surprise transfer twist
James Maddison could be on track for an unexpected departure as Tottenham prepares to listen to offers.
Injuries have defined Maddison’s time in North London since he transferred from Leicester City in 2023.
The midfield maestro has only just returned to Spurs’ first-team training after an ankle injury robbed him of the closing games of last season.
The Englishman’s talent is undeniable. But it now seems like his fluctuating availability could cost him his place at Tottenham.

Tottenham to listen to Maddison offers ‘at the right price’
The signing of Mohammed Kudus has made competition in the midfield that more rife.
There is every chance that Maddison was planning on fighting for his starting spot next season. However, it now appears that the London club could be tempted to take the decision out of his hands.
Season | Injury | Games Missed |
2024/25 | Knee Injury | 6 |
2024/25 | Calf Strain | 5 |
2023/24 | Ankle Injury | 13 |
Speaking on We Are Tottenham TV via YouTube (27 July), Ben Jacobs said: “What happened last season was that Maddison was in and out, he lacked fitness at times and consistency even when he was fit.
“I don’t think it’s unthinkable that they would listen to offers at the right price, but it’s not a case of trying to force him out or transfer list him, it’s not their plan that he will leave, but there could be consideration to offers at the right price.”
Tottenham could bring in another midfielder
The sale of Maddison would give Spurs enough to splurge on another high-profile midfield signing this summer.
However, the options on the market are becoming sparser each minute. Earlier this month, the Lilywhites believed that Morgan Gibbs-White was a Tottenham player in all but name. But Nottingham Forest vetoed his transfer and extended his contract until 2028.
Daniel Levy will be hesitant to move for a player, which could result in a similar humiliation ritual. As a result, he is likely to take his time before deciding to pounce on another midfielder.
Xavi Simons was a credible option for a period of time. But the choice to pursue Gibbs-White meant that Simons was pushed into the waiting arms of Chelsea, who are close to completing his transfer.
As such, the London club could return for Eberechi Eze, who is also being tracked by Arsenal this summer. While his transfer would be an uphill battle, the Gunners have just signed Viktor Gyokeres for £55million plus £8.5m in add-ons and could wait until making another big signing.
Thus, it could be the case that Tottenham have waited too long to sign another midfielder this summer. However, if Maddison does leave, a return to the window cannot be ruled out.
