Johnny Cardoso strikes transfer agreement amid Tottenham links

Tottenham have the preferential option to buy Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis for a £21million fee.

This was part of the deal that saw Giovani Lo Celso leave the Lilywhites to join Real Betis last summer.

Spurs’ option to sign the 23-year-old midfielder is only valid until the end of June, so they have to reach an agreement before that.

Atletico Madrid strike transfer agreement for Cardoso transfer

According to Spanish news outlet Diario de Sevilla on 6 June, Atletico Madrid appear to have beaten Tottenham to the transfer of Cardoso.

He wants to continue plying his trade in Spain rather than moving to the Premier League.

It’s understood that the United States international does not fancy joining the Europa League winners, even though they can offer him Champions League football.

Atletico have made an opening offer of over £25million to sign Cardoso, but that’s still shy of Betis’ valuation of the midfielder.

They are looking for around £34million if they are to let go of their star player in the summer transfer window.

Tottenham must continue their search for a new midfielder

While signing Cardoso would have been a significant coup for Tottenham, his decision to join Atletico Madrid is far from catastrophic.

The 23-year-old brings dynamism and defensive solidity, qualities that would have bolstered Spurs’ midfield.

His versatility and work rate could have complemented Ange Postecoglou’s high-pressing system, should he stay on as manager.

However, Tottenham’s qualification for the Champions League opens doors to attract a higher calibre of midfielder.

The allure of Europe’s premier competition, combined with Spurs’ project, makes them an attractive destination for elite talents.

Players with proven experience at the highest level, potentially from top European leagues, could offer more immediate impact and star quality.

Tottenham’s existing midfield options provide a solid foundation and strategic signings can elevate the squad further.

Missing Cardoso stings, but Spurs’ Champions League status and financial pull position them to target game-changing midfielders who can drive their pursuit of silverware.
