Johnny Cardoso ‘snubs Tottenham agreement’ for new transfer already

Tottenham won their first major trophy in 17 years as they lifted the Europa League, which now also grants them access to the Champions League next season.

Spurs will hope that their European success will allow them to attract higher-quality players in the transfer market, after a few seasons of underwhelming recruitment.

Ange Postecoglou’s future is still unclear, and it will be difficult for Tottenham to proceed on much of their transfer business until their managerial situation is resolved.

However, they already know that one potential target will not be joining them, despite a previous agreement.

Johnny Cardoso to reject Tottenham for Atletico Madrid

Tottenham sold Giovani Lo Celso to Real Betis last summer, with the Argentine returning to Seville after a difficult spell in North London.

Spurs sold the midfielder at a huge loss, but as part of the deal, they were given a first-refusal clause on Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso.

The USA International has been outstanding in La Liga, and started as his side lost to Chelsea in the Europa Conference League final.

Tottenham have an option to buy him for just £21million, but Marca (29 May) have now reported that the Lilywhites will not take up this option, as he does not want to go there.

Cardoso reportedly “wishes” for a move to Atletico Madrid, despite Spurs’ presence in the Champions League, and he is “unequivocal” in his desire to move to the Spanish side.

Cristian Romero could follow Cardoso to Atletico Madrid

Spurs will be frustrated at Cardoso’s desire to move to Atletico Madrid, given that he would have certainly strengthened their options in midfield.

More frustration could follow, as Cristian Romero is now being targeted by Diego Simeone’s side for a big-money move.

Romero’s desire is currently unclear, but with two years remaining on his deal, he could be sold if he refuses to commit to the club.

Tottenham will hope for some strong incomings this summer, but despite competing in the Champions League, it will still be a tough ask to compete with other huge clubs in the race for top-quality signings.
