Jamie Carragher reacts to Tottenham transfer news after ‘Incredible’ development

Jamie Carragher has shared his instant reaction to the news Mathys Tel could yet sign for Tottenham in after a remarkable development on Deadline Day.

However, the Bayern Munich ace is now set to undergo a medical ahead of a move before the 11pm deadline on Monday (3 February), in what has been described as an “incredible twist” (Florian Plettenberg, 3 February).

Carragher reacted to the news live on Sky Sports News (3 February, 4:07pm) and believes the Frenchman is joining “one of the most exciting teams in the league”.

He said: “It doesn’t look like Tel had too many options. To be fair to the lad, if Arsenal and Manchester United were there you would probably pick those clubs ahead of Tottenham. I could understand that.

“The fact that Tottenham are getting him on loan now, I think that’s a good deal for both teams. He can get a look at Tottenham, Tottenham can get a look at him – a young player with potential.

“He hasn’t played too much football at Bayern Munich at all. If he settles in well at Tottenham, he will get definitely lots of chances. They creates chances and scores goals, they are one of the most exciting teams in the league.”

“So I think this move works for player and the club. He obviously fell out of favour at Bayern Munich, he didn’t get the minutes he would have liked. So this works for everybody.”

Tottenham beat the odds to secure Mathys Tel signing

Levy may have his critics in North London, but credit where credit is due, his persistence has allowed Tottenham to secure a blockbuster Deadline Day signing.

In typical Levy fashion, he has got his man on the cheap. The impending signing is a straight loan move after a £50million fee was agreed with Bayern Munich prior to the initial collapse [Le Parisien].

While his reluctance to leave the Bundesliga giants in a permanent transfer was one of the main reasons behind the failed approach, he will face an uphill battle to win over the Spurs faithful.

He had no qualms about agreeing to move to Premier League rivals Manchester United before another failed negotiation.

However, Tottenham will be relieved Tel didn’t push forward with a move to North London rivals Arsenal.

Tottenham, Mathys Tel

Nevertheless, the supporters were crying out for additions, and Levy has delivered, so for now, the move can only be viewed in a positive light.

Furthermore, the signing gives a clear indication on the future of Ange Postecoglou. The boss stepped in for his own face-to-face talks with the player and now he will be sporting the white of Spurs in the Premier League.
