Harry Kane return: Ex-manager reacts to ‘sensational’ transfer news

Tottenham hero Harry Kane has been linked with a sensational move to Premier League champions Liverpool this summer.

The striker left Tottenham for Bayern Munich in 2023 and has only furthered his status among Europe’s elite goal-scorers.

This season saw him score 26 goals and provide 10 assists as Vincent Kompany-led Bayern stormed to the Bundesliga title – the first major honour of Kane’s career.

However, the 31-year-old’s future at the Allianz appears to be in doubt, with rumours suggesting that he could return to the Premier League.

Liverpool move for Kane dismissed by former manager

Arne Slot’s first season as Liverpool manager was an unmitigated success.

The Dutchman’s fast-paced, flowing tactics took Jurgen Klopp’s team, who had crumbled at the end of last season, to best all competition on their way to the Premier League title.

The standout – Mohamed Salah – produced arguably the best individual season in the league’s history, yet the Egyptian’s form in recent weeks may suggest he will need help to retain the title.

Kane could provide exactly that but former Leicester City and Brentford manager, Martin Allen, was quick to dispel the rumours.

Allen told Liverpool News: “I don’t think there’s any way in a million years that Liverpool would want to sign Harry Kane.

“He’s not mobile enough, he plays through the middle as a striker and doesn’t get in behind or play with any pace or tenacity that Liverpool need.

“I don’t think he fits their model, so I can’t see that move happening.

“There are other clubs that would be in for him, but I don’t think Kane has it in him to play at the level to win Premier League titles.

“I know he’s done it in Germany but it’s a different league to what it is over here.“

Premier League return for Kane still possible

As suggested by Allen, Kane is not the same player who tore up the Premier League in his time with Spurs.

Despite scoring three times for England at the 2024 Euros, the striker appeared sluggish and ineffective at the latter stages of the tournament.

So much so, that Gareth Southgate’s decision to start England’s captain in the final was called into question, with Kane substituted in the 61st minute.

However, to dismiss the 31-year-old’s current ability, would be to dismiss his stature as a three-time Premier League golden boot winner, and his standing as the second all-time goal-scorer in the competition.

And his numbers this season cannot be ignored either, with an impressive 11 goals in the Champions League adding up to an astonishing 82 goals scored in his two seasons at Bayern so far.

While Kane may have regressed from his, once inevitable, striking prowess, any club would be sure to benefit from the Englishman’s innate capability to put the ball in the back of the net.
