Fabrizio Romano sees Tottenham finalising deal to sign ‘really important midfielder’ in transfer udpate

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are hoping to sign an “important midfielder” ahead of next season.

Since Ange Postecoglou arrived in North London from Celtic, the new Spurs boss has overseen much change in the team’s engine room.

Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma have both become regulars, with the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp reduced to squad player status.

With the future of those players in doubt, Romano has said that the club are looking to purchase a new reputable midfielder during the summer transfer window.

Speaking to JD Football, Romano revealed: “I see Tottenham signing an important midfielder in the summer, a really important one, I think they want to add something special in that position.”

Should Tottenham Hotspur spend big on a midfielder this summer?

After a chastening 3-0 defeat away to Fulham last weekend, questions have been raised about whether Spurs must improve further to become competitive.

That defeat at Craven Cottage has given Aston Villa the upper hand in the race for the top four once again, while Spurs remain 10 points adrift of the runaway top three in the Premier League.

Postecoglou has recently claimed that qualifying for the top four is not an achievement in his eyes, and that he only chases titles, and to enter that conversation, Spurs need additional reinforcements this summer.

While both Sarr and Bissouma have impressed on occasion in the Tottenham midfield, ratings from WhoScored see them both averaging below a seven out of 10 in the Premier League this season.

That is clearly a level below the likes of Declan Rice at Arsenal, Rodri for Manchester City and Alexis Mac Allister at Liverpool, who all feature for the sides Spurs will be looking to challenge next season.

With Hojbjerg, Skipp, and Giovani Lo Celso likely to depart the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the near future, it would make sense for Spurs to focus their attention on strengthening the midfield position ahead of next season, when Champions League football could also return to the calendar.
