Cristian Romero reaches verbal agreement over Tottenham exit in ‘generational’ transfer

It has been a disastrous season for Tottenham, with Cristian Romero coming under particular fire this week.

Thomas Frank’s side are sat 15th in the Premier League, carrying just a five-point gap to the drop zone.

Spurs were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United at the weekend, with captain Romero’s first-half red card rubbing more salt into what is now a huge wound.

The Argentine has been sent off twice this term, and will miss the next four matches, including the North London derby at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium later this month.

Romero joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021 and has been linked with a move aay throughout his time at the club.

Now, fresh reports from South America indicate that an exit could come sooner rather than later.

Real Madrid now favourites for Cristian Romero signing

Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid carried interest in the centre-back last year, before Romero chose to stay in North London following Spurs’ Europa League triumph.

Now wearing the captain’s armband, the 27-year-old is attracting further interest from Spain, from Atleti’s city rivals Real Madrid, and Catalan giants Barcelona.

Romero is set to take part in the upcoming World Cup for Argentina, who are looking to retain their crown.

South American outlet D Sports reports that Real Madrid have reached a verbal agreement with Romero’s agent, who could join up with Los Blancos following the tournament.

The outlet describes a potential move as a “generational renewal” of the defence at the Bernabeu, outlining that Tottenham are aware of the player’s decision.

The centre-back has made 28 appearances for Spurs this season, scoring six times and registering four assists from the backline.

Tottenham have not progressed as imagined for Cristian Romero

Following Spurs’ Europa League triumph last May, supporters envisaged a new era, with the club’s trophy drought finally ended.

That has not come to fruition under Frank, who replaced Ange Postecoglou over the summer.

And too often this term, Romero has been the author of his own downfall at the back, with his most recent suspension being his third of the campaign.

Romero is a world-class defender, and someone who could comfortably walk into most top sides.

And of course, he isn’t the man to blame for Tottenham’s overall problems, with Romero’s recent Instagram post outlining his thoughts on the club’s general direction.

Naturally, the crop of world-class talent within the club’s ranks are disgruntled after what was expected to be a season of real progression in North London.

Now, with Spurs on for a second successive bottom-half finish in the Premier League, there could be a mass exodus on the cards over the summer – setting the club up for yet another rebuild period.
