Postecoglou speaks out on Cristian Romero exit bombshell at Tottenham

Cristian Romero could be set for the Tottenham exit door amid Spurs’ woeful Premier League campaign.

The North Londoners will suffer their 19th top-flight defeat of the season if they are beaten by league leaders Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Arne Slot’s men need to avoid a defeat against Ange Postecoglou’s side to be crowned Premier League champions.

Meanwhile, defender Romero has been eyed by La Liga giants Atletico Madrid and could be set to leave Spurs.

Postecoglou plays down importance of Romero exit news

Romero has managed just 18 Premier League appearances for Tottenham this season, courtesy of injury problems.

But he remains one of Postecoglou’s best defensive assets in an otherwise leaky backline that have shipped 51 goals in the top flight this term.

Romero even this week said it is a dream of his to play in LaLiga in a bombshell admission.

However, when asked about Romero’s potential exit at Friday’s (25 April) press conference, Postecoglou said: “Do you know what’s important right now? It is not Cristian Romero’s future or anyone else’s future.

“It is that we have an unbelievable opportunity to do something special at this football club, and for me and everyone involved internally, that is what we’re concentrating on.

“Let’s put our heads down and make sure, because I think for our supporters, that is what’s the most important thing to them, right now, all they care about is that we’re in the last four of a European competition and we want to do something special. That is where our focus is.”

Spurs must not let Romero bombshell stand in way of Europa League success

The current campaign has been a turbulent one for Tottenham, while Postecoglou is set for the sack regardless of whether the North London outfit can win the Europa League.

Spurs supporters will have wanted the Australian to give a clear answer regarding Romero’s future, as the 26-year-old remains an important asset.

But Postecoglou is right to point out that his side’s attention must be fully channelled towards the Europa League, where Tottenham can win their first silverware since 2008.

Thanks to their shocking domestic season, Spurs’ only chances of achieving success rest in Europe, while the North Londoners should back themselves to defeat Norwegian outfit Bodo/Glimt in the semi-finals.

A final with either Manchester United or Spanish side Athletic Bilbao would then await Postecoglou’s men, who should be eager to create history despite their Premier League struggles.

Perhaps winning the Europa League title could convince Romero to stay in North London, as such a triumph would secure Champions League football at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
