Ange Postecoglou to keep Tottenham squad away for days after transfer vow

Tottenham players will be given two days off to “get away from everything” as January preparations continue, Ange Postecoglou has said.

Speaking to Daily Mail Sport, Postecoglou said that while he’ll continue to work on finding reinforcements to his squad once the transfer window opens, Spurs’ players are in need of physical and mental rest.

The Lilywhites looked to be on their way to a first Premier League win in four after coming back from 1-0 down to lead Wolves 2-1 on Sunday, but an equaliser three minutes from time continued their woes.

In quotes reported by Mail Sport’s print edition (30 December, page 7), Postecoglou said: “The whole group probably needs a couple of days to just get away from everything and recover.

“I think it’ll do them good to have a couple of days to themselves with their families and give them a chance to recover mentally as much as physically.

“I’ll just keep going – we’ve got work to do.”

Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou face huge January transfer task

Postecoglou is spot on in his verdict that Spurs have “work to do” over the next month, with several members of a depleted squad still making their way back from long-term injury lay-offs.

The North Londoners’ makeshift backline continues to look porous at best in the continued absences of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, with centre-back surely the key position to target in January.

Archie Gray – who is 18 and not a centre-back – and the injury-afflicted Radu Dragusin have been thrown to the wolves in recent weeks, and certainly not helped by Postecoglou’s gung-ho style of play.

The Australian is looking at signing players who will fit with that high-octane style of football [The Times, 28 December], but the January window also brings challenges in terms of player availability and inflated transfer fees.

Regardless, the Lilywhites need a helping hand over the next few weeks, and Postecoglou will hope that their brief spell away from the training pitch can revitalise a squad under immense pressure.
