Why Will Lankshear could be big winner if Tottenham suffer Premier League relegation

Tottenham Hotspur are staring at the possibility of relegation to the Championship.

Igor Tudor’s start to life as interim head coach couldn’t have gone any worse so far, with three defeats from his opening three games in charge with Tottenham.

As such, Spurs currently sit ominously above the relegation zone in 16th, but only by one point, with both Nottingham Forest and West Ham primed to leapfrog them at a moments notice.

Tottenham’s odds of relegation have surged following their 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace last time out, and if they are to drop down to the second tier, a massive Spurs summer transfer overhaul will take place in N17.

Will Lankshear could find key role in potential Spurs overhaul

The vast majority of Spurs’ current first-team crop will surely have very little interest in playing Championship football, whilst the wage bill will have to be trimmed significantly too.

As such, whoever is in charge of Tottenham next season may have to work with a largely youthful squad, and it could also present some big opportunities to a number of Spurs’ academy stars.

One of those who could be primed for a major Lilywhites role next season, should they go down, is striker Will Lankshear.

Lankshear signed for Oxford on a season-long loan in this season’s summer window, having spent the second half of last season also out on loan in the Championship with West Brom respectively.

The 20-year-old wasn’t able to provide a single goal contribution in his 11 games with the Baggies though, but he’s blossomed into a star player for Oxford in the second tier this term.

He’s bagged eight goals and one assist in 34 league games for the Championship’s 23rd-placed side, which is a very respectable return given Oxford’s struggles.

Therefore, it’s safe to assume that in a Spurs team in the Championship, with better quality players and service around him, he could score enough goals to spearhead the Lilywhites attack in that division.

Tottenham have already shown long-term faith in Lankshear

Having joined Tottenham from Sheffield United in 2022, Lankshear has always been a highly-rated talent at Tottenham.

That was evidenced in the summer of 2024, when he penned a new long-term contract with the Lilywhites, that sees him contracted to Spurs until 2029.

Having already made a handful of Spurs appearances in both the Premier League and in Europe, Lankshear has already received votes of confidence in N17, and now he could be ready to really kickstart his Spurs career.

With the likes of Dominic Solanke, Richarlison and Randal Kolo Muani all sure to leave if Tottenham are relegated, Spurs are sure to look to the market for some reinforcements up top.

However, putting their faith in Lankshear to lead the line could see Tottenham greatly rewarded indeed.
