Tottenham need to rekindle Villa Park form as Aston Villa trip awaits

Tottenham Hotspur have lost their last two games at Villa Park, ahead of Spurs’ visit to B6 this Sunday.

A corner may just have been turned in N17, as Tottenham are now in the midst of a two-game unbeaten run.

Roberto De Zerbi looks to have been a shrewd appointment, as his team were mightily unlucky not to beat Brighton, before putting that result right away at Wolves last time out.

Now though, a four-game gauntlet awaits the Lilywhites, with Leeds, Chelsea and Everton all still to play before the season is over.

Aston Villa are next up for Tottenham, with their historic Villa Park not being a happy Spurs hunting ground in recent times.

What is Tottenham’s record at Villa Park?

Tottenham have had to wait quite a while to get their hands on Aston Villa in the Premier League, with their reverse fixture taking place back in October last year.

That ended in a 2-1 defeat for Spurs at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the scoreline reading the same again when they reconvened in the third round of the FA Cup on 10 January this year.

De Zerbi has a poor record against Aston Villa, with the Spurs boss losing three of his four games against the Villans during his managerial career so far.

But, it’s not just the Spurs gaffer who has had a rough time of things against the West Midland outfit.

Indeed, as detailed via Transfermarkt, Tottenham have lost three of their last four matches at Villa Park in all competitions, with their most recent victory coming in a 4-0 thrashing in March 2024.

That’s been incredibly frustrating too, as prior to their 2-1 loss in May 2023, Tottenham had actually boasted a remarkable unbeaten run at Villa Park.

Beginning all the way back in March 2009 and not coming to an end until that aforementioned loss in 2023, Spurs went on an incredible 12-game unbeaten run at Villa Park in all competitions.

That wasn’t just filled with draws either, as the Lilywhites took 10 wins over that time period, drawing twice.

What is Unai Emery’s record against Tottenham?

So, Villa Park did indeed used to be a very fruitful hunting ground for Tottenham up until recent years, and what Spurs would do for another three points on Sunday.

Villa boss Unai Emery won’t be in a charitable mood though, as his team also need to put the bow on their Champions League qualification campaign.

The Spaniard will be confident of doing exactly that too, as he’s won eight of his 13 career matches against Tottenham, drawing twice and losing three.

In fact, he’s currently on a four-game winning run against Spurs in all competitions, dating back to 2-1 FA Cup win on 9 February 2025.

However, Villa were in action on Thursday night in the Europa League, and so perhaps fatigue could play into Spurs’ hands this time round.
