Tottenham: Lewis Family statement reads hollow – action must be taken now

Tottenham Hotspur secured Premier League survival by the skin of their teeth on Sunday.

Beating Everton 1-0, Roberto De Zerbi’s side ensured that West Ham’s exploits against Leeds did not matter all too much.

Though the Lilywhites simply should not have been in the predicament in the first place, and after two successive 17th-place finishes, a serious reset is needed in North London.

And after releasing a statement on Wednesday, the Lewis Family must begin to follow their own advice.

Lewis Family release statement after dismal Tottenham campaign

It has been a dismal year for Tottenham, who were dragged into a relegation scrap less than a year after winning the Europa League.

Burning through two managers in Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor, the North London club landed on De Zerbi, who was able to drag Spurs to safety.

Releasing a statement following the end of the season, the Lewis Family said: “As owners of 25 years, we have lived the highs and lows of Spurs with you.

“Finishing 17th this and last season does not reflect the stature or potential of this football club. We are bitterly disappointed and share your frustration. You and we expect more than this. We know this must never happen again.”

Strangely, the statement’s formatting listed reasons for failure before then suggesting that full responsibility is taken, making it feel somewhat hollow.

Ending the piece, the statement read: “We care deeply about Spurs. The rebuild the club needs, and you deserve, has begun. The change required is deep. It will take time and commitment, but change is happening.

“We know that actions will speak louder than words,” read the conclusion.

And that final sentence is the one those among the hierarchy must begin to take their own advice if Spurs are to truly recover.

Lewis Family must take their own advice if Tottenham are to recover

For years, Tottenham have been a club in disarray both on and off the pitch.

From haphazard recruitment to the constant changes in direction in terms of the manager in the dugout, the signs have hardly pointed in the direction of a club carrying the right tools for success.

The fact of the matter is that there has been little to show for the money suspended – this is not due to the ‘Spursy’ tag, or a simple coincidence either, it is mismanagement at all levels that the supporters of the club have not deserved one bit.

The statement is right, actions do indeed speak louder than words.

While on one hand, the words are better than complete radio silence, the entirety of the piece would ring incredibly hollow should there not be improvement.

What fans want is simple: A plan, a style of play to get behind, and the idea that progress is something to be strived for.

That has not been the case for several years, and the Lewis Family are right, there needs to be action as soon as possible.

Simply though, it would be nice to see them listen to their own advice moving forward.
