Tottenham relegation: Injuries to keep ENIC wage bill through the roof with Xavi Simons set to stay
Tottenham Hotspur may find it difficult to shift some of their big earners, like Xavi Simons, if they get relegated from the Premier League.
Roberto De Zerbi grabbed his first win as Tottenham boss when they edged already-relegated Wolves in a nervy 1-0 affair at Molineux on Saturday.
That ended their 15-game winless run, which stretched back to 28 December, but they are still two points behind 17th-placed West Ham with four games to go.
To make matters worse, summer signing Simons and Dominic Solanke went off injured against Wolves, with the former rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament and the latter sustaining a muscle problem.
If the north London team does drop into the Championship, Tottenham will be in a world of financial turmoil, and may struggle to bring in much-needed revenue from player sales, too.

Tottenham’s finances to get a battering
Reports suggest that Tottenham could see their revenue drop by more than £200million if they get relegated, with the safety blanket of Premier League income no longer in the offing.
Incidentally, Tottenham are understood to have the seventh-biggest wage bill behind Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Aston Villa.
Therefore, if they go down, they will have the biggest Championship wage bill in history.
| Tottenham’s injury crisis | Potential return |
| Dejan Kulusevski (Knee) | June |

| Guglielmo Vicario (Hernia) | Early May |

If relegation is confirmed, Tottenham’s players will try to flee the Spurs ship like sailors abandoning a sinking vessel.
With Simons and Wilson Odobert likely to be out for much of the year, and James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski barely playing this season, could Tottenham be stuck with these big-money players for a while?
There will be interest in the likes of Mohammed Kudus, but these players may be part of a Tottenham fire sale in the coming months.
Some teams may take a punt and see some players as worth it in the long run, but they are also on huge wages, something they may not be able to match.
According to Capology, Simons is on nearly £200,000 a week, Maddison is said to be on £170,000, while Kudus is reportedly on £150,000 a week.
Moreover, Tottenham’s accounts ending 30 June, 2025, revealed a loss of £94.7m.
Their total revenue was £565.3m, which was helped by match receipts, winning the Europa League, and increased commercial revenue. That will plummet in the Championship.
According to The Athletic, most of Tottenham’s first team squad are on deals that include mandatory salary reductions, with many seeing their earnings slashed by around 50 per cent.
But in the Championship, those salaries are still likely to be far too big for comfort and close to six figures per week for many of the squad. Ergo, dark times could lie ahead for Tottenham.
Tottenham given late hope
After an insipid defeat at Sunderland, followed by a spirited and yet agonising draw with Brighton, Tottenham finally got the monkey off their back with a win at Wolves.
This was far from being a convincing victory, but the three points were all that mattered. De Zerbi will now hope this can be the catalyst for a great escape.
While a fixture list of Aston Villa, Leeds United, Chelsea, and Everton is not the easiest on paper, Spurs may sense an opportunity.
Villa are in Europa League semi-final action on Thursday before hosting Tottenham on Sunday. Chelsea have an FA Cup final to look forward to, with a Tottenham game likely to fall close to that fixture.
No game is easy, but Spurs will hope this victory is the beginning of a few falling stones that start an avalanche in the mountains.
If not, ENIC are set for a world of pain, both on and off the pitch.
