Tottenham’s most memorable Premier League wins vs Manchester United: Old Trafford thrashing and Lucas Moura masterclass

Tottenham fans have some fantastic memories to think back on when facing Manchester United in the Premier League.

United lead Tottenham 15-12 when it comes to their head-to-head record since the inception of the Premier League, with eight draws alongside, though the latter have picked up plenty of fantastic results during that period.

After Spurs’ 2-2 draw with Manchester City last time out at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, they travel to Old Trafford this weekend, aiming to topple a Manchester United side who have won three out of three under Michael Carrick.

With this in mind, here is a roundup of some classic Spurs wins against Saturday’s opponents.

AVB’s Spurs hold on for famous away win

Back in September 2012, Spurs ended their 23-year-wait for a victory at Old Trafford – holding on to take all three points late on.

The visitors looked to be in firm control in the opening period, through first-half goals from Jan Vertonghen and the electric Gareth Bale, who finished the 2012/13 campaign with 21 Premier League goals.

Nani would halve the deficit in the second half, before American forward Clint Dempsey restored the two-goal lead for Spurs.

Though Shinji Kagawa would strike back immediately for the hosts – prompting a nervous end for Andre Villas-Boas’ Tottenham side, who held on for the first win at Old Trafford since 1989, when Gary Lineker scored the winner.

United would lift the Premier League at the end of that season, for what would be the last time until this moment – wins at Old Trafford would begin to become more common for Spurs.

Tottenham secure perfect White Hart Lane sendoff

In the final match at the old White Hart Lane, Spurs fans saw their team give them the perfect sendoff, with goals from Victor Wanyama and Harry Kane securing a 2-1 victory in the penultimate match of the 2016/17 season.

Wanyama would get the hosts off to the perfect start after he headed home just five minutes in, before Harry Kane doubled the lead early in the second half – flicking the ball in following a Christian Eriksen free-kick.

Wayne Rooney would grab one back for Jose Mourinho’s United, but they would fall to defeat in North London.

Spurs would finish that season in second behind Chelsea, offering hope going into their season at Wembley under Mauricio Pochettino.

Lucas Moura masterclass as Spurs mount pressure on Jose Mourinho

Tottenham maintained their 100 per cent start to the 2018/19 Premier League season with a fantastic win away at Old Trafford.

After an evenly matched first half, Kane would open the scoring for the visitors early in the second half, beating David De Gea with a fantastic header. Lucas Moura would double the Spurs lead within two minutes, and the Brazilian would go on to be the star of the show.

Following a breathtaking counter-attack, the wideman would power an effort past De Gea in front of the travelling Tottenham contingent to make it nine points out of nine at the start of the campaign.

Mayhem behind closed doors as Tottenham hit Manchester United for six

One of Tottenham’s greatest results of the modern era was secured in 2020, the only downside being that it was secured in front of an empty Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes would open the scoring for the hosts in just the second minute, but Tanguy Ndombele would respond for Spurs no more than two minutes later. And from then, Mourinho’s visitors took complete control.

Son Heung-min and Kane would go on to score twice, with Serge Aurier also on the scoresheet in what would be a simply remarkable 6-1 win.

In the process, Spurs would match their biggest ever win against United, though the 6-1 triumph of 1932 was secured on home soil.
