Wayne Rooney spot on, Tottenham really do have a superstar on their hands

Tottenham saw their bright start to the new season continue with a 1-0 win over Villarreal on Tuesday night.

The Lilywhites are back in the Champions League for the first time since 2022/23, and they got off to the perfect start as they secured three points against their Spanish visitors.

Thomas Frank’s Spurs side made life difficult for themselves in the second half, but they showed their newfound defensive steel once again to cling onto the win.

Wayne Rooney was part of Amazon Prime’s team of pundits for the midweek clash, and he has wasted no time in heaping praise on this star in N17.

Lucas Bergvall has a huge future at Tottenham

Rooney has already praised Tottenham for the start that they have made under Frank, but he was a lot more targeted with his statements in the aftermath of Tuesday night’s game.

The former Manchester United and England hero singled out Lucas Bergvall for his performance, and he stressed the quality that the 19-year-old provides in the midfield.

“Sometimes you forget how young he is because he played a lot of games last season, and the maturity with which he plays is fantastic,” Rooney said on Amazon Prime’s coverage, relayed by The Mirror.

“It’s not easy to get on the ball and be in the right positions, but I thought today he showed the different side to his game, which will only improve him in the future.”

Bergvall became the second-youngest player to ever notch a goal and an assist in the same game for Spurs in the recent win over West Ham, and he turned in a similarly influential display in midweek.

The Sweden international provided the cross that resulted in the own goal that won the game for his team, and completed 80% of his passes in what was another bright creative display.

The youngster won more tackles than any other Premier League player aged below 20 last term, while only Tyler Dibling and Archie Gray bettered his tally of 27 appearances in the same age category.

Bergvall has been thrown in the deep end since coming to England, but his recent performances are only reinforcing the idea that Spurs have a future superstar on their hands.

Lucas Bergvall could become one of Spurs’ best ever signings

Tottenham snatched Bergvall from under Barcelona’s nose, and it could end up being one of their best ever pieces of transfer business if he reaches his full potential.

The N17 outfit paid a fee of around £8.5million for the midfielder, and that is already looking like an absolute steal.

The starlet is very mature for his age, and was already a key player for Djurgardens in the Swedish Allsvenskan before he made the switch to the Prmier League.

Spurs have made their fair share of excellent signings over the years, but if Bergvall continues to develop as expected, then he could yet top the lot.
