Yves Bissouma leaves Ange Postecoglou ballistic in Tottenham defeat v Chelsea

Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma made manager Ange Postecoglou go “absolutely ballistic” early in their Premier League defeat at Chelsea, and couldn’t make much of an impact.

Daily Mirror journalist Ryan Taylor spotted Postecoglou’s rage just moments before Chelsea’s opening goal after Bissouma failed to switch play early.

Tottenham spent much of the rest of the game chasing an equaliser, and Bissouma was withdrawn well before his side conceded a second late on to lose 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.

After Trevor Chalobah had made it 1-0 to Chelsea, Taylor posted on X, saying; “Moments prior to the goal, (Postecoglou) went absolutely ballistic at Bissouma for failing to switch play.”

Tottenham loss to Chelsea not helped by Bissouma no-show

Tottenham were undone by two Chelsea set-pieces at Stamford Bridge, but as Taylor points out, Bissouma’s failure to get his side out of dangerous positions cost them dearly in the first half.

Bissouma had achieved a respectable 7.0 SofaScore rating before being withdrawn for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on 63 minutes, but had very little impact on trying to turn things around for Spurs, registering zero shots and just 0.04 expected assists.

Perhaps the thing that annoyed Postecoglou the most about his failure to switch play to Brennan Johnson was the fact that of the seven long balls tried by Bissouma, he found his man with six of them, and could have added another to that tally just before Chelsea scored themselves.

The Malian proved ineffective in possession elsewhere though, losing the ball on nine occasions in total, and while he may have put in two tackles and an interception, he was dribbled past with ease by Mykhailo Mudryk, almost leading to another Chelsea goal.

Bissouma playing within himself is not the sole reason that Tottenham lost at Stamford Bridge, but had he imposed himself on the game more in the earlier stages, Spurs may have been able to prevent Chelsea from winning the set-pieces that ultimately proved decisive.

He simply let himself down for too much of the game.

In other Tottenham news, the club do at least hold the honour of being the Premier League’s “best” in one increasingly-important area.
