Tottenham’s Mason Melia set for international breakthrough as Ireland learn of five withdrawals
Tottenham Hotspur may be going through a tricky present, but the future does look bright with 18-year-old wonderkid Mason Melia.
The Irishman was signed in 2025 but had to wait until 2026 to join the Lilywhites due to rules created through Brexit.
English sides are unable to sign EU-based players before they turn the age of 18, so Melia instead continued the season with St Patrick’s Athletic.
Despite being just 17 years old at the time, Melia was finding the level of the League of Ireland quite easy, notching 17 goal contributions in just 35 games. An excellent return for a player of his age.
Since making his transfer to Tottenham, Melia then had to bide his time to get going due to injury. But after recovering, he has been flying in the youth squads, earning himself a senior Ireland call-up for the upcoming international matches.

Why Mason Melia is in line for Republic of Ireland debut
The Irish national team have had to make a few changes to their squad as they prepare to take Qatar on in a friendly on 28 May in Dublin.
Alan Browne, Alex Gilbert, Finn Azaz, Ryan Manning and Andrew Omobamidele have all withdrawn from the squad for various reasons as per the official Ireland Football account.

For Melia, he will be taking note of those attacking players such as Gilbert and Azaz, who he may have been competing with for a place.
Although Melia is typically a centre-forward, those outside attacker roles could be utilised by another striker, with the wingbacks in Ireland’s 3-4-2-1 set-up holding the width instead.
Meanwhile, manager Heimir Hallgrimsson is not totally opposed to going with two strikers up front, with variations of a 4-4-2 also utilised during his tenure so far.
Melia, though, will still have some competition ahead of him with Jack Moylan called up due to the withdrawals.
The door is certainly open for Melia to make an impression, and with two friendly games and little on the line, it is quite likely for the Ireland manager to hand out those debuts.

Meanwhile, after recovering from injury, he hit the ground running in the Tottenham youth squads, scoring three goals in six appearances.
At youth level for Ireland, Melia has been a standout star over the years, netting 16 goals in 38 appearances at varying age groups.
What has Heimir Hallgrimsson said about Tottenham’s Mason Melia?
After announcing Melia’s Ireland call-up, manager Hallgrimsson spoke on the decision to hand him his inaugural international test.
He stated: “He has the qualities that we are looking for in a sense of his running behind; he’s a hard-working kid, and he will fight for every scrap.
“All of those things he has, and we saw that last year. Hopefully he will get a run of games and start pre-season well, hopefully at Tottenham, and hopefully they will be in the Prem!”
The Ireland manager has got his wish, with Tottenham set to play in the Premier League next season after securing their status on the final day of the campaign.
Hallgrimsson is not shy to turn to fresh blood, with an out-of-window international game versus Grenada earlier in May scheduled to do just that.
Meanwhile, former Ireland manager and now St Pats’ boss Stephen Kenny stated about Melia: “Obviously an outstanding young player, one of the best young players that’s been in the league really.’
Now, it would be a surprise if Melia did not feature at all in the upcoming matches against Qatar and Canada.
