Tottenham forward Bryan Gil must be axed, lost the ball six times v Manchester City

Bryan Gil did not do himself any favours when it comes to making an impression on Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou during the first half against Manchester City.

Spurs found themselves 2-1 down against the reigning Premier League champions at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday (3 December) after a difficult first half, in a match they went on to draw 3-3 in a thriller.

Despite arriving in Manchester with a depleted squad, Postecoglou still lined his team up to go toe-to-toe with the champions, and if they had a bit more composure in the final third, they could have found themselves on level terms at the break.

The visitors took the lead inside the sixth minute through Son Heung-min but gave up their advantage just a few minutes later when Son then diverted the ball into his own net from a free-kick.

Phil Foden gave the hosts the lead midway through the first half and despite Guaridola’s men having the better of the chances, Postecoglou’s team certainly showed signs of life.

Wastefulness on the ball in the final third is what ultimately let them down, with Bryan Gil the main culprit of this, and the Spaniard was consequently replaced by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg at the break after a disappointing afternoon.

As per SofaScore, the winger only managed to complete 79 per cent of his passes, with none of those being key and struggled to create any big chances. In addition to this, he didn’t manage to complete a single cross or long ball forward and failed with his one dribble attempt.

While he often found himself on the ball in good positions, he seemed to continuously make the wrong decision and gave the ball away six times during his 45 minutes on the pitch.

Defensively he gave things his best go, making one interception and one clearance, but he failed to win his one ground duel and overall it was a day to forget for the 22-year-old as his struggles in a Spurs shirt continue.

With the injury crisis facing the club, Postecoglou will need much more from Gil in the weeks to come.
