Tottenham could have a star for the future in 18-year-old Lucas Bergvall
Tottenham could have a midfield star on their hands following the signing of 18-year-old Lucas Bergvall.
Spurs were the Premier League’s most active club in the January transfer window, as they completed the signings of Radu Dragusin, Timo Werner and Bergvall.
Of those three additions, the signing of Bergvall, which was announced by the club via their official website on his 18th birthday (2 February), could prove to be the most shrewd bit of business.
Bergvall will arrive at Hotspur Way in July, and Johan Lange’s recent comments suggest the midfielder should expect to be thrown right in at the deep end.
Speaking for the first time since joining the club in November, Spurs’ technical director spoke about Bergvall during a sit-down interview (via Tottenham’s Official X, 8 February).
“Lucas is a very mature player, despite him just turning 18. He’s a box-to-box midfielder, very good in possession and able to control the game, and the same out of possession, he has a great work rate.
“Then for his age, he’s mature as a person and on top of that he also has a very good family and support network around him, so he has great potential.
“He will join in the summer and be part of the first team squad but then it’s just for him to adapt to this new environment and take things step by step.”
Tottenham future looks bright under Postecoglou
Spurs are building a squad full of young talent at Hotspur Way, with the likes of Dejan Kulusevski, Micky van de Ven, Destiny Udogie and Pape Matar Sarr all 23 and under, and that is just to name a few.
Sarr and Udogie have both burst onto the scene this season, with Postecoglou showing full trust in the pair of 21-year-olds, and there is no reason why Bergvall won’t be given the same treatment when he arrives this summer.
As Lange pointed out, the Swede is a “mature” player, and from a look at his career so far, it is hard to disagree with that assessment.
At the age of 17, he had already made 42 senior appearances in Sweden, playing 29 times in all competitions for Djurgarden as they finished fourth in the Allsvenskan last season.
Based on some of his numbers, it is hard to believe the midfielder is as young as he is.
In one of the final games of the season, a 2-1 win away at Brommapojkarna on 28 October, Bergvall got himself on the scoresheet while he also completed 91 per cent of his passes, was successful with two of his three dribble attempts, made one tackle and two interceptions (Sofascore).
He has already made his senior debut for the Sweden national team during a 2-1 win over Estonia on 12 January.
Bergvall came off the bench in the 59th minute that day and slotted in right away as he completed 100 per cent of his passes, won 100 per cent of his aerial duels, won three of his five ground duels and completed one of his two dribbles.
Postecoglou will be looking forward to working with the player, who has all the characteristics of a midfielder who can flourish under the guidance of the Australian.
