Timo Werner must prove doubters wrong as Danny Murphy ‘perplexed’ by Tottenham announcement
Timo Werner must prove himself at Tottenham after the club announced he would be rejoining ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
The club confirmed [28 May] that they have reached an agreement with RB Leipzig to loan the 28-year-old for another season, with the deal including an option to buy.
With two goals and three assists in 13 appearances before sustaining a hamstring injury, Werner’s Tottenham cameo was greeted with a very mixed reaction, with many fans thinking they would not see him again.
However, that is not the case, with the potential to make him a permanent signing at the end of the next season, and Danny Murphy is just as surprised as some Spurs fans.
Speaking live via talkSPORT on Wednesday (29 May, 11:26am), he said: “Simon [Jordan] and I are both a little shocked and perplexed by this one. He hasn’t set the world alight – far from it.
“My only thinking is that they must be wanting to bring a big one in on top, and having him as more of a backup.”
Tottenham re-sign Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig
Though his season did end abruptly, Werner brought a spark to Ange Postecoglou’s squad, notching five goal contributions in the Premier League as well as maintaining an 81 per cent pass completion. [FotMob]
For a winger who Simon Jordan often refers to as a “speedboat without a brain”, it is clear that the German possesses the ability to bring more than just pace to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Compared to wingers in Europe’s top five leagues, as per FBref, Werner ranks in the top 91 percentile for total shots as well as the top 98 percentile for non-penalty expected goals.
While this can be seen as a negative, with the player missing five big chances in the Premier League, Werner represents a real threat in the final third and could be a dangerous addition with a boost of confidence. [FotMob]
He also ranks in the top 99 percentile for progressive carries and the top 95 percentile for touches in the attacking penalty area, which only adds to his threat in the opposition’s box. [FBref]
Once Postecoglou can settle the 28-year-old, which should be easier during a season-long loan, fans may be surprised by how integral he could be to the team, and even shock Murphy.
With 95 goals in 159 appearances during his first four years with RB Leipzig, there is certainly a talented player waiting to burst onto the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium pitch.
